High blood pressure (hypertension) increases the risk of atherosclerosis, a disease caused by the buildup of fatty deposits (called plaque) inside the arteries. Plaque narrows the arteries, which can make it harder for oxygen-rich blood supply to reach different areas of the body. Clogged or narrowed arteries can increase the risk of many health problems, including chest pain, blood clots, stroke, heart attack, and more.

It’s important to manage high blood pressure to decrease the risk of atherosclerosis and related cardiovascular diseases.
