What Is an Interaction?

An interaction is a reaction between a medication and something else you take or use, such as:
- Other prescription or over-the-counter medications
- A vitamin or supplement
- A food or beverage, like grapefruit or leafy greens
- Another substance, like alcohol or cannabis
If you experience an interaction, it may increase or decrease how effective your medication is, as well as the levels of the medication in your body. Interactions can also cause unwanted and/or dangerous side effects.
Drug interactions can complicate your treatment, especially if a new medication could interact with something you’ve already been taking. Your healthcare provider will check for potential interactions when they prescribe you a new medication. Be sure to tell your provider about all vitamins, supplements, and other medications you take.
