How to Reduce Holiday Money Stress
The return to the holiday season also means a return to holiday stressors — and that includes money. In one poll, 64% of American adults said money is a significant stressor in their lives. And about one in five people said their mental health is negatively affected by financial pressures.
Many of us feel guilt or anxiety about paring down our gift list or scaling back on extravagant purchases. We don’t want to let others down. But there are some ways you can reduce holiday money stress while still spreading joy.
1. Be Thoughtful
Take time to thoughtfully consider what each person likes and might appreciate, rather than attaching an arbitrary dollar amount or level of gift to give. This can result in a more satisfying gifting experience for everyone involved. Remember that some people in your life might love something handmade, a card with a personalized message, extra time with you, or help with chores instead of a pricey item
2. Make a List
Having a tangible list helps you maintain financial focus. It prevents impulse buying, not only unnecessary items for others but tempting things you want to buy for yourself, too. The other upshot is that you can get a sense of satisfaction from staying on task and checking everything off the list.
3. Ask Yourself Why
If you start to get caught up in feeling like you should be doing or spending more, and the stress sets in, take a step back and reconnect to the moment. Mindfulness practices like deep breathing exercises and meditation can help, even if you only have a few minutes. Once you check in with your body, ask yourself why you’re making this decision or why you’re feeling pressure. Chances are, you’ll realize it’s not necessary to go overboard.
No one wants to disappoint people but remember the positive reasons you’re making responsible decisions about your money. This will help you stick within your limits. The people in your life don’t need expensive things to know you love or care for them.
