GLP-1 Injection Tips for Less Anxiety and Pain
GLP-1 medications are prescribed to help people manage diabetes or their weight. Like with any medication, it’s important to take a GLP-1 medication as directed in order for it to work.
But most of these medications require injections, and many people have fear or anxiety around needles and managing injection pain.
If injections are tough for you, there are some things you can do. We cover them in this video.
1. Talk to your doctor about your options
In most cases, GLP-1 medications are delivered using an injection pen. These pens have small needles that are inserted just under the skin, so they shouldn’t cause much pain.
If you have trouble using your injection pen, talk to your doctor. There may be other options with pens that are easier for you to use.
Also, while some GLP-1 drugs require daily injections, other options need to be injected just once per week.
Alternatively, there’s a daily semaglutide pill available for some people with type 2 diabetes.
2. Have a medical professional walk you through it
Your doctor or a nurse should be able to teach you, step-by-step, how to use the medication.
Read through the instructions too, so you know exactly how to safely and more comfortably administer the injections.
3. Practice relaxation techniques
Tensing up can increase injection pain. Find ways to relax and explore the stress management techniques that work best for you.
4. Rotate injection sites
Administer injections into clean, dry skin on your abdomen, thighs, or upper arms, switching to a new area each time. This can help you avoid an area of your body that’s sore or sensitive to reduce pain.
5. Practice post-care
If you experience mild swelling, or discomfort at the injection site, you can apply a cool compress or gently massage the area. If you experience any severe reactions, reach out to your healthcare provider right away.
6. Enlist an injection buddy
If you’re still having trouble giving yourself injections, ask a close family member or friend to help.
