Doctor-Approved Tips for Sticking to GLP-1 Treatment
This article is part of a Q&A series in which a healthcare professional answers your frequently asked questions.
We asked Tama Porter, M.D., an endocrinologist at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago, to share her tips for taking GLP-1 RA (receptor agonist) medication as directed — and sticking to the plan.
What would you say are the biggest challenges people experience when trying to stick to their GLP-1 treatment plan?
Dr. Porter: The biggest barrier to adherence is probably gastrointestinal (GI) side effects, such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and constipation. These side effects tend to be dose-dependent, so sometimes, adjusting the dose can help. But the prefilled syringes are less flexible in terms of dosing.
What are your suggestions for sticking with treatment and making sure you’re taking your GLP-1 medication as directed?
If your GLP-1 medication is dosed weekly, I suggest taking the injection the same day every week and marking it on a calendar or setting an alarm on your phone as a reminder.
Review your injection technique with a nurse, educator, or your provider to make sure you’re administering it correctly.
It may also help to have a friend or family member assist with the injection. They can help you remember to take your medication as scheduled or with any trouble you have with injecting.
Have regular appointments with your provider to make sure your prescription is up-to-date, and the dose is being adjusted as needed.
Adjust your diet with smaller, more frequent meals, stay hydrated, eat fewer carbs and greasy foods to help avoid GI side effects.
Don’t be discouraged if weight loss doesn’t happen as quickly as you expect. Everyone responds differently to GLP-1s and to different doses.
With any treatment, it’s important to stay consistent to achieve your desired goals. If you’re having trouble sticking with your plan due to side effects, finances, or any other reason, it’s important to reach out to your provider to help troubleshoot things with you.
