Can Type 2 Diabetes Be Reversed with Lifestyle Changes?
Video transcript:
Type 2 diabetes is one of the most common health conditions worldwide, but it’s not always permanent. Research shows that you may be able to reverse it through healthy lifestyle changes.
Type 2 diabetes begins when your body becomes resistant to insulin — the hormone that helps move sugar from your blood into your cells. When insulin doesn’t work well, sugar builds up in your blood, which can lead to serious health problems over time.
Insulin resistance can be caused by carrying extra weight, especially around the belly. Other reasons include not getting enough physical activity and eating too much processed or sugary food. But lifestyle isn’t the only factor. Your genetics, family history, race, income, and environment also play a big role. Where you live, what food you can access, and how easy it is to stay active all matter too.
Reversing diabetes, also called remission, means bringing your blood sugar levels back to a healthy range — without needing to rely on diabetes medication. It doesn’t mean you’re cured, but your body is managing your blood sugar on its own.
Studies show that losing 10 to 15% of body weight, adjusting diet, and moving more can help many people reach remission, especially when changes happen early in diagnosis. Some people may also benefit from GLP-1 medications or bariatric surgery, but lifestyle changes are often the safest, most affordable, and most sustainable approach.
Reversing type 2 diabetes can lead to less or no need for medication. It can also mean more energy, a lower risk of heart disease, nerve damage, and kidney issues. And a longer, healthier life.
